What Is Cryolipolysis?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Brandon Mines, MDLast reviewed May 1, 2026

Cryolipolysis is a non-surgical fat-reduction treatment — best known by the brand name CoolSculpting — that uses controlled cold to freeze and destroy fat cells. It has been FDA-cleared since 2010 and is backed by peer-reviewed clinical research. The body then naturally clears the treated fat cells over the following weeks.

How it works

A device cools targeted fat to a temperature that destroys fat cells while leaving surrounding skin and tissue unharmed. Once those cells are eliminated, they do not return. It is most effective on stubborn, localized pockets — areas like the abdomen and thighs — in people already near their ideal weight.

What to expect

Cryolipolysis is designed to fit into real life with minimal disruption.

  • Results typically appear within 4–6 weeks, with full results around 3 months
  • Average fat reduction of roughly 20–25% in the treated area
  • Minimal downtime — most patients resume normal activities right away
  • Side effects are mild and temporary (numbness, redness, swelling)
