How to Apply Retinol: Before or After Moisturizer?
Medically reviewed by Dr. Brandon Mines, MD

In most routines, apply retinol before moisturizer. Putting retinol on clean, dry skin first lets it absorb fully and work effectively, while a moisturizer layered on top seals it in and helps protect against dryness.
Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, stimulates collagen production and speeds skin cell turnover — which is why it helps with fine lines, acne, hydration, and hyperpigmentation.
The five-step routine
Use retinol at night, and follow a simple sequence for the best results.
- Cleanse your face
- Pat completely dry
- Apply a pea-sized amount in dots across the face
- Wait a few minutes for it to absorb
- Seal with a hydrating moisturizer
Sensitive skin? Try buffering
If your skin is sensitive, dry, or new to retinol, the buffering technique reverses the order — applying moisturizer first to dilute the retinol’s potency. Beginners should also start slow: once weekly, gradually increasing frequency over several weeks as tolerance builds.
What to pair — and what to avoid
Retinol pairs well with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, and ceramides. Avoid combining it with exfoliants, benzoyl peroxide, and fragrances or alcohol-based products; use vitamin C at a different time of day. Because retinol increases UV sensitivity, daily sunscreen is essential.
