What Is MOTS-c and What Does It Do?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Brandon Mines, MDLast reviewed May 1, 2026

MOTS-c is a naturally occurring mitochondrial peptide (short for Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA type-c) that supports cellular energy production. Rather than acting as a stimulant, it works with your mitochondria — the energy factories inside your cells — to help them use fuel more efficiently.

It does this largely by activating AMPK, an energy-sensing enzyme that signals the body to tap into fat stores and improve insulin sensitivity.

What MOTS-c does

Its benefits center on energy and metabolism at the cellular level.

  • Enhances mitochondrial function and energy output
  • Improves glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity
  • Increases fat burning during exercise or calorie restriction
  • Protects cells from oxidative stress
  • Supports exercise performance and recovery

Who it may help

MOTS-c is often considered for adults with a slowed metabolism, persistent fatigue despite good sleep, blood-sugar control issues, or those seeking cellular-level support for healthy aging. Some longevity benefits have been observed in animal studies, though research is ongoing.

At Bubolo Medical, MOTS-c is part of our physician-supervised Metabolic Muscle Stack for fat loss, muscle preservation, and energy.
