What Brittle Nails Say About Your Nutrition and Hormones
Medically reviewed by Dr. Brandon Mines, MD

Persistently brittle nails are often a clue about your internal health, not just a sign of dryness or too much hand sanitizer. When nails stay weak despite good care, the cause may be a thyroid issue, shifting estrogen, chronic stress, or a nutrient gap — and treating the surface will not fix a problem that starts inside.
Are hormones behind it?
Hormones strongly influence nail strength. Low thyroid function (hypothyroidism) commonly causes brittle nails, particularly in women over 35. During perimenopause, declining estrogen reduces hydration and collagen production, leaving nails more fragile. Chronically elevated cortisol from stress adds to the strain.
Could your gut be the problem?
Even a great diet does not help if you are not absorbing nutrients. Digestive issues can prevent nails from getting what they need to stay strong.
The nutrients most associated with healthy nails include:
- Biotin
- Iron
- Zinc
- Magnesium
