Estrogen Dominance: What Women Should Know

Medically reviewed by Dr. Brandon Mines, MDLast reviewed May 1, 2026

Estrogen dominance happens when estrogen levels outpace progesterone — even if estrogen itself stays within a technically normal range. That imbalance, not a single high number, is what drives symptoms, which is why standard labs can look “fine” while you do not feel fine.

Common symptoms

Estrogen dominance is especially common in women from their late 30s through their 50s, and it can show up in many ways.

  • Jawline breakouts and cyclical skin issues
  • Mood swings, brain fog, and irritability
  • Sleep disruption and fatigue
  • Breast tenderness, bloating, and weight gain
  • Irregular periods

What drives the imbalance

Several factors can tip the estrogen-to-progesterone ratio: elevated cortisol from chronic stress, liver overload from processed foods and alcohol, gut dysbiosis, exposure to xenoestrogens in plastics and personal care products, and the natural hormonal shifts of perimenopause or coming off birth control. Because estrogen influences serotonin and dopamine, an imbalance can also affect mood directly.

How we address it

At Bubolo Medical, care starts with comprehensive hormone testing, then a personalized plan that may include bioidentical progesterone therapy, liver and gut support, anti-inflammatory nutrition coaching, and non-invasive skin treatments for hormonal breakouts. We serve women across Marietta and Acworth in the metro Atlanta area.
